Lixisenatide is a peptide hormone that belongs to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors. It is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, including those with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 27 kg/m2 or who have had type 2 diabetes for more than 10 years. Lixisenatide reduces postprandial blood glucose levels by delaying gastric emptying and increasing glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) release. Lixisenatide has been shown to be effective in reducing cardiovascular events in people with congestive heart failure. Lixisenatide also has water vapor and cardiac effects that are similar to those of GLP-1 agonists.
